Week of August 18, 2008
Dear Parents,
I will be sending a parents letter home the first day of our school week,
similar to this one every week. I always read the parent letter with the students
prior to having them put it in his/her take home folder. I trust you have
seen the way we have organized our binder with a pocket for every subject.
As I hand things to the children, I will instruct them to put each item in
the proper folder. Once they get in this habit, it should make organization
easier for them. We also have certain items we are allowed to keep in our
cubby, and certain items we keep in our desk. As you have seen Pleasant Grove
has also a new behavior plan this year that the whole school is following.
The new plan is to remove “color changes” and the stigma that
may come with a certain color.
Two things that may be different in our class are the ways we do homework,
and spelling/vocabulary. Homework: Most weeks I will have your child read
an AR book for 15 minutes, then when time is up s/he will write the book title,
author, and page numbers read on a piece of paper, and a very simple summary
of what is read (maybe 2 sentences). I will also ask them to study multiplication
facts for 10 minutes each night and study his/her vocabulary words for 15
minutes. After studying vocabulary words and multiplication facts, your child
will write (on the same piece of paper as the story) what they actually studied.
You will then sign their paper saying they did what they said. They will turn
the signed paper in to me the following day. Some weeks I will have them doing
assignments on the computer/website, and some weeks we will have a different
project to do. Vocabulary: We will do vocabulary each week instead of spelling
words. The words will be taken from the story they are reading that week,
or from subject content we are working on that week. The average child will
have 5-8 words every week. They will get a point for spelling each word correctly,
a point for writing the definition, and a point for writing a complete/correct
sentence showing the meaning of the word. We will practice this in class this
week so they understand what to do.
