Why do I consider myself a turtle in counseling?

Compare the muddy water to our minds when we sometime get a mess in front of us from bad choices or negative things happening in our life.  We might not think we can see our situation through to a solution.

Turtles are good navigators because they have experience, and skills to help them travel through the muddy water.  As a counselor, I am like the turtle because I am reliable in helping you search within yourself through questions.  I will stick with you and help you learn new skills, leading you to down-to-earth solutions.

I will help you resolve conflicts, and talk to teachers and parents when students need help (a mediator or go between).  You are not in trouble when you come to see me, and I am not here to discipline you.  I am here with confidentiality, to help you.

Mud will soon settle at the bottom of the water, it’s not perfectly clear, but you can see through it again.  Counseling doesn’t always make everything perfect again, but the skills you learn can help you see things better, and maybe understand things better, helping you cope with the situation.

Different types of counseling and examples may include the following:

Individual Counseling- specific needs, one-on-one

Group Counseling- better ways to communicate, get along with others

Classroom Guidance- building skills by grade level and topics may include bullying, peer pressure, friendship, career choices, etc.

If you want to see me, you can write a note telling me your name, your teacher’s name, and why you need to see me, and then drop it in the box on my door.  If it’s an emergency, write urgent or emergency on that paper.
